BECOME A STUDENT

How does an adult in Wake County enroll in the Connection One-on-One Tutoring Program

Step 1 - Call
The first step is to call the Literacy Council at (919)787-5559 to set up the initial interview and assessment.  At this initial meeting, a Literacy Council staff person will collect some basic information and discuss each individual's goals and aspirations in learning to read, write, and speak English. Next, the individual will take an assessment that gauges his or her ability to read and understand English.

Step 2 - Assessment
Once assessed, the individual will be placed on a waiting list until we can match them with a volunteer tutor with similar availability for weekly tutoring sessions.

Step 3 - Matching
Upon being matched, the student and tutor will meet for the first time at the Connections Meeting, facilitated by a staff person. During this meeting, the student and tutor will be introduced, the student will share their goals for learning, and both will agree to a weekly meeting time and place. From this point on, the pair will work towards each student's particular needs and goals.  At all times during the tutoring process, both student and tutor are supported by the Literacy Council through resources, regular contact with the Adult Education Coordinator, and through post-assessments.

Note: The entirety of this process is confidential and all services offered by the Literacy Council of Wake County are free.

Please contact us by e-mail or at 787-5559 if you or someone you know need help improving their literacy skills.
